Over the last 20 years, we’ve held a lot of seminars. Our largest event was held once a year in March, and it was called BootCamp. It was a huge gathering of Independent Business Owners from all across North America. We had an assortment of speakers, sessions and workshops, one of which was a “Marketing Hot Seat”. In that session, customers could share a problem, opportunity or challenge they needed help with. One year, a longtime customer expressed frustration over dessert sales. No matter what she did, she could not increase dessert sales and could not get staff on board to upsell them.
In the hot seat session, a fellow attendee suggested something simple… a contest. Everyone loves some friendly competition, so why not create a simple way for staff to complete (and win!) and increase dessert sales at the same time. Spontaneous ideas and breakthroughs like this were commonplace at BootCamp. And so, when she went back home, she created a simple competition: whoever sold the most slices of pie by the following Friday won a trophy —and the honor of having their photo taped to the pie case. That was it. No cash, no fancy tracking system. Just bragging rights and a little fun. (And it was a cheap plastic trophy from the dollar store, but that didn’t matter.)
But it worked. Within days, her team got fired up. Servers were pitching desserts with flair, dreaming up clever descriptions, offering pie pairings, and even practicing their sales lines on break. Dessert sales shot up, and so did morale.
That little contest proved something big… FUN + VISIBILITY + A SPRINKLE OF COMPETITION = REAL RESULTS. What If You Could Use That Same Energy to Grow Your Rewards Program?
Your team is the front line for enrolling new members into your Rewards Program and processing their transactions. They’re face-to-face with your customers every day. And they have the power to turn a casual visit into a loyal relationship—if you give them the tools, the motivation, and a little friendly competition.
That’s where a staff contest can become your secret weapon. The best part? It doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. In fact, the simpler, the better. The easier it is for your staff to understand, the more likely they’ll jump in and stay engaged. The next page includes a quick glance at how easy (and impactful) a staff contest can be to encourage new member signups. And, just like dessert upsells applied for our BootCamp attendee, this concept can stretch to other parts of your business as well.
Auto Repair Shop: Run a “Top Tire” contest. For one month, track which service advisor or tech secures the most tire replacements or rotations. Each qualifying sale earns a point, a prize or the title of “King of Tread” on a big board in the staffroom.
For a Retail Store: Try a “Basket Booster” challenge. Every time a team member adds an upsell—like gift wrapping, a featured accessory, or impulse item at checkout—they earn a point. Track progress with a sticker board in the break room. The person with the most stickers at the end of the month gets to choose the next staff playlist, wins a coffee gift card, or earns the title of “Retail Rockstar.”
Your Coach can build all the materials for your contest—scripts, tracking sheets, posters, and even prize ideas. Just reach out and let them know you’re ready to give it a go!
