Every morning, the entire Royalty Rewards® Team gets together for our morning huddle. We dedicate time to updates, announcements, & reminders, we take time to celebrate wins from the previous day, and we also have the opportunity to share something we’re grateful for. And almost every morning, as my turn gets closer, my mind goes completely blank. It’s not because I don’t have anything to be grateful for. But I’ve come to realize that gratitude isn’t something I can manufacture on demand. I first have to notice it.
I was recently listening to an interview with a communication expert, and she shared an observation that really stuck with me. She explained why asking someone, “How was your weekend?” rarely starts a memorable conversation. Instead, she suggested noticing something specific: “That’s a great jacket.” “How did you get into this business?” “I noticed you always remember people’s names.” Her point? Real conversations begin when someone feels seen.
Since hearing that interview, I’ve caught myself trying to notice the little things more often. At the end of appointments, I’ve stopped simply saying, “Thank you.” Instead, I say, “I really appreciate your time.” “I really appreciate that feedback.” “Thank you for your focus on me today”. It’s a small change, but it lands differently. It recognizes something people rarely hear. We are all used to hearing “Thank You”, but we aren’t often used to being acknowledged individually and specifically.
I’ve often heard people talk about the benefits of keeping a gratitude journal. I’m personally not ready to start one, but I am going to try something different. Instead of waiting until our morning huddle to think of something I’m grateful for, I’m going to make a mental note of those moments as they happen. My guess is that, by the time my turn comes around, I won’t be searching for something to say… I’ll already have a list.
And so, I’d challenge you to a simple experiment. Think about the people you interact with every day: your spouse, a team member, a neighbour, your doctor, the cashier you see every week. Instead of the usual “Thanks,” look a little closer. Notice something specific. Tell them what you genuinely appreciate about them. Or compliment them on something else you notice. You might be surprised how much more meaningful those few extra words become. And when it comes to being grateful, Thanksgiving isn’t very far away. Start making those mental notes now. By the time you gather around the table, you might find you already have plenty to say.
